Mammoet tries 180 tonnes without torque converter

Mammoet is known globally for it’s achievements in exceptional transport. As other Volvo Trucks customers, Mammoet is trying a four axle 600 hp FH16 to use in operations where weights of up to 180 tonnes have to be moved. Until Volvo introduced it’s I-Shift gearbox, the use of a relatively heavy and expensive, but comfortable torque converter was common to move the high gross vehicle weights smoothly.

Volvo says it can do without the convertrer and this is what Mammoet wants to know for sure with this new vehicle. The four axle FH has an I-Shift box with Heavy Duty programme and this should be perfect to replace the torque converter. The Volvo comes with three of the four axles in tridem position to optimize weight distribution.
