New Volvo VNL with standard driver assist system

Volvo Trucks of North America has introduced the new VNL tractor. This is the first major overhaul of the Volvo flagship class 8 tractor that was first introduces in 1996. “The new Volvo VNL builds on our long-standing commitment to deliver the safest, most comfortable and most efficient long-haul truck on the market,” said Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Infused with new innovations and technologies, we’re proud to expand upon that commitment to our current and future customers with this new design.”

The Volvo VNL comes with five cab configurations, including a day cab. The largest is the 77 inch high roof sleeper cab.

There are different fuel economy packages for the new VNL delivering up to 7,5% of increased fuel economy compared to the current VNL XE Fuel Efficiency spec. 5,5% of this fuel improvement is caused by the turbo compound system on the D13 engine that will be available next year. Aerodynamic improvements and a ‘longer’ rear axle ratio of 1:2.47 each also ad one percent.

New is that Volvo is introducing the Advanced Driver Asssist system in the USA as a standard. This collision warning and braking system is manditory in Europe and Volvo is now pushing it in the USA. The system detects other traffic and warns the driver when a collision could apear. When the driver does not react it reduces the speed or even brings the truck to a standstill.
