Volvo Supertruck concept saves more fuel

volvosuper2The Volvo Supertruck is a concept truck that saves fuel, takes more cargo and has a lot of interesting things on board for the future. The U.S. Department of Energy’s SuperTruckprogram is a cost-shared, public-private partnership that promotes research and development to improve the freight-hauling efficiency of heavy-duty Class 8 long-haul tractor-trailer trucks. The program aims to help accelerate the development of advanced efficiency technologies that are not currently available in the market.

Volvo created an ultra fuel-efficient truck for the Department of Energy (DOE)SuperTruck program. The goal was to dramatically increase freight efficiency and reduce carbon emissionsby pushing the limits of fuel efficiency for Class 8 on-highway tractors.

The Volvo Supertruck uses Turbo-compounding on the D13 Common Rail engine. Also there is a special shaped ‘wave’ piston that allows the fuel to burn more cleanly. Weight reduction was achieved by using an aluminium chassis frame and composite and carbon fiber mateirals. Aerodynamics and special Michelin tires did the rest. Volvo claims up to 70 procent more fuel efficiency for this Supertruck.
